BMW i9 Plug-in Hybrid Planned for 2016

After the success of the i8 hybrid model, the BMW German based luxury automaker is pushing things forward, planning to launch a new i9 plug-in hybrid supercar, due to hit the market somewhere in 2016.

The BMW automaker hasn’t made any official statements of launching an i9 plug-in hybrid model, but there was a report from Auto Motor und Sport stating the future planning of such a supercar.

More than that, the same report is also mentioning that the new i9 plug-in hybrid will be also the follower of the M1, also serving as a tribute to the BMW`s centenary.

In terms of powertrain, the so called BMW i9 plug-in hybrid model would be coming with more power than the already great i8, which is currently producing 362 horsepower and 570 Nm of torque.

But in order for the i9 to be more powerful than the i8 hybrid, the automaker would have to drop the 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged gasoline burner, and change it with a larger and more powerful version.

Rumors state that the BMW i9 plug-in hybrid is supposed to compete against the other powerful hybrids on the market, like the Ferrari LaFerrari, the Porsche 918 Spyder, or the McLaren P1, but we should find out more in 2016.
